Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Proper Pruning different from other pruning services?

Basically, everything! Some important differences are:

  • For Proper Pruning, gas or electric hedge trimmers are the exception, not the rule, because in most cases that damages the plant. We mostly use bypass hand pruners and know in what situations it is okay to use power trimmers.
  • We have very different kind of employees. Every one of our pruners speaks fluent English, has a college degree, and has training on how to prune different types of plants.
  • Our pruners don’t treat every plant the same: they have an esthetic strategy for each landscape and the knowledge to prune each plant correctly for that strategy and the long-term health of the plant.

How often should I schedule pruning services?

Pruning frequency depends on your plants and landscape goals. We typically recommend 2-5 pruning sessions annually, tailored to your desired level of manicured appearance. Post-initial pruning, we’ll suggest a personalized schedule based on your landscape's specific needs.

Why is using electric and gas-powered trimmers bad for plants?

While not always detrimental, over-reliance on electric and gas-powered trimmers in the industry can cause indiscriminate cutting, harming plants with large leaves or those susceptible to pests and diseases. These trimmers often create a superficial green layer, blocking essential light and air, inviting pests and diseases, and hindering plant size control. Proper pruning techniques can prevent these issues and avoid premature plant replacement, offering long-term cost savings.

Do you offer free estimates?

We happily offer free estimates, including an on-site assessment and an informative video about your plant pruning plan. This service helps you understand our approach and the benefits for your landscape.

Why can’t my lawn maintenance crew prune my plants?

Most lawn maintenance crews lack the specialized pruning skills we provide. At Proper Pruning, we invest in our employees, hiring exceptional talent and offering comprehensive training and competitive wages. This approach ensures you receive expert service from dedicated professionals focused on your complete satisfaction.

How can I schedule an appointment?

Booking an appointment is straightforward and flexible via our Request A Quote form. Choose between a personal discussion about your plants or a convenient, non-intrusive visit. Either option includes a detailed walk-through video with expert commentary on your plant care.

What time of the year should my plants be pruned?

Pruning times vary based on plant type, past pruning history, location, and aesthetic objectives. While light pruning is generally safe year-round, significant pruning is best performed in winter or spring. Our professionals consider these factors carefully before pruning to ensure optimal plant health and appearance.

"On time, started the project and stayed on it working 4 days until finished. His crew are fantastic workers, I bought lunch on the last day for everyone. FYI, I never write reviews, this company is first class at reasonable pricing. I got 3 different quotes and then was referred to Chris Johnson landscape, I’m so thankful I was able to contract with him."

"Chris and his team are quite simply a unique brand unto themselves. I am very, very picky. Full disclosure. Chris quickly drew up a professional design, priced it and came 30% less than my budget. I was never pressured at all, the process was relaxing, fun, and exciting. While the team was here, it was great! They were all super cool people! Best group of folks... The quality of the work, and the care that was taken felt to me like everyone working at my home treated it as if it was their home."
